  • Engaging content
  • Photographs
  • Logos
  • Simple & easy to read fonts
  • Attractive color theme
  • Taglines
  • Business Name

Engaging Content

  • Write to attract the right people
  • Focus on what you want to promote
  • Taglines that will get people’s attention
  • Content should be simple and clear to understand
  • Avoid getting too fancy
  • Provide honest information

Photography & Images

Using unique or even humorous photographs and images will get people’s attention before anything else, and even though your a business being creative with fun imagery can be one of your best strategies. Instead of treating your banner serious add some of your own personality, but keep your imagery related to the purpose of your banner ad.

Taglines & Logos

If your business has a tagline be sure to be using it in your banner, you want to create an image for your business so be creative with your tagline and use it in all your marketing promotions. The two things you want to take your time designing first will be your business logo and your tagline, you will find these are going to be a great asset to people remembering your business and what your business promotes.

What Fonts To Use

You want to combine your own personal favorite fonts as well as the best fonts that are easy to read, so I have included some of the better ones you should consider when designing your marketing promotions.

  • Helvetica
  • Baskerville
  • Times New Roman ( My Favorite )
  • Gotham
  • Futura
  • Georgia

I prefer most of the time using my favorite Times New Roman, but I do experiment with these other fonts from time to time for a new look. I usually receive the best results when I use my favorite on my banners, but much of this also depends on your business and your readers.

Color Combinations

This is very important to draw the attention of people on your website or on your social media, and everywhere else your banners will be seen. According to graphic designers, these are the best color combinations you should consider using.

  • Black & White
  • Mustard & Black
  • Red & Blue
  • Royal Blue & Rust
  • Tan & Maroon
  • Purple & White
  • Navy Blue & Cream

According to this, I am not using one of the best color combinations but I really like my black background with dark blue text. I am also using Times New Roman font, and I just have been using this combination for years and I have become partial to this banner design. I think sticking to this design has kind of given my business it’s own unique branding, but according to the pros I should be using another color combination.

Business Name

You should always have your business name on your banners, but I have banners I designed that I don’t have my business name on. The reason for this is you will find most of your social media sites has your business name and logo on your post, but the extra promotion actually is something I should start using more on all my banners.

What Is On My Mind Today

I have shared the best free templates, the best free banner generators, and banner tips to consider when creating your banners for your business marketing plan. You will notice I am using my own photograph as my business logo, and when I started this it was supposed to be temporary. As the years went by I just never designed a logo, so now people know me by my photograph and it has worked out well. My tagline is business training for small business owners and bloggers, I chose this tagline because it is very clear what my business is about. You can sometimes be very simple without being clever with your tagline and logo, so don’t allow these to overwhelm you and just go with what feels right to you.

  1. I’ve been putting off branding my sites but I should really focus on logos, banners and the visual appearance. I’m an engineer, not a graphic designer. I can’t draw, not with my hand and not with a computer.

I think templates like these will come really handy. I will definitely check them out. I do have GIMP installed and I’ve done some editing with but I must confess that my go-to image editor is the classic Microsoft Paint. There’s nothing as simple and fast lol!

    1. Thank You,
I appreciate you visiting my website, and reading my post, and commenting.
I recommend you use whatever program works for you, I thank you for taking
the time to share with my other readers and me.

  2. Hey Jeff, I love the resources you have included in this post. I can tell you, I am always looking for free banner templates. The ones I find are often low quality or you have they don’t include the graphics in PSD format. As you probably know, separating out components of an image is not easy when you don’t have the layers available.

I have also found another alternative (no attribution). It’s an online Photoshop-like tool called It’s free to use and I find it can handle most functions that people would use.

I do use Canva too, and it has become a tool of choice in my set of tools.

I also like that you included some tips along with the resources. I know that will help me as it will others who visit your article. I will be waiting for the next Photoshop lesson.

    Best Regards,

    1. Thank You, Jim

    Thanks very much!

  11. Hi, Jeff.

Thank you for sharing a lot of information on the banner. For the last couple of months, I have been focusing on the contents of my site. As my site contains better content, I am also going to pay more attention to the promotion of my website. Creating a banner will be a great idea for promotion. A simple looking logo and tagline will draw a lot of attention if it is designed well.

For the concept of template, I have thought that it is only applicable to a document. The template of a graphic design project will save a lot of time and needless steps for me. Although I have been hesitant to use the design software as a newbie, the word ‘template’ provides me with the courage to try it out. Thank you so much.

It is great to know that the free version of Photoshop is available. I rather want to try Canva, as you suggested.

Creating a banner is an excellent idea, and I will try it out for my marketing promotion. What I have learned from this article will be highly beneficial for my online business. I owe you a lot.

    Thank you.

    1. I thank you Mr. Kang

I do recommend Canva for beginners since Photoshop takes time to learn how
to use it effectively and efficiently, and I am using Canva more and more
      and Photoshop less

  12. Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for the top tips!
I’m not using the ideal colour combinations either according to the experts, but I still think my colours work well and depict my business. I think yours are good too so you don’t need to worry about that.

I use Canva all the time, in fact, I’ve never used anything else because like you say, you can pretty much get anything you need on the free version. There has been a couple of times that I have wanted to use the fonts and translucent background that is on the premium so I have simply signed up to their month free premium trial. I have done this on 3 different email accounts now haha.

You have given me some valuable advice about taglines and how important they are on your banner so I may rethink that area of my website.

    1. Thank You for sharing Ms. Taylor

I appreciate you sharing your tip on how to get the free monthly trial
for Canva premium, I never thought of doing that myself and there has
been times I also have wanted transparency backgrounds so I had to
do it in Photoshop which is time-consuming

  13. Thanks for all the information about how to make websites more more beautiful and sharing tips with us. I definitely write that information down and maybe use it in the future. Especially about banner, what I need to learn more about and of course design of your website is most important. If you have confused home page what people don’t understand then it’s quite difficult to attract people.

But overall I like your webpage, that you can help people with very important things.

    1. Thank You, Elari
I try to make my website as simple as possible for my readers
and provide them business tutorials that will be an asset to
      their business.
